Hosting a Golf Charity Outing

Fundraising is essential for any cause/non-profit.  It's January 2010 and I'm brainstorming fundraising options for a non-profit with which I work.  The topic of setting up a golf tournament comes up.

I'm not afraid of hard work, but a tourney...that sounded...well...daunting.

I did what any self-respecting busy multi-tasker would do...I tabled the idea and figured I'd get back to it later.

Fast forward to July 2010.  This article pops up on my RSS reader from yet another fantastic blog, Ladies on the Tee.

Well heck, maybe I'll organize that tournament after all....but not without some help. :-)

Just gotta "Git-R-Done!"

The car's in the shop, homework must get done, and I...well I am allowing myself to get lost in golf stuff...again.  I believe everyone has had a bout of this from time to time....well maybe not with the golf stuff.

So what am I doing exactly?

Well, I finished reading and writing a discussion board post for On Writing by Stephen King.  It's quite a great book, actually, with lots of wit, frank writing, and memories from King's humble beginnings.

Of course, the car entered the shop (with my clubs in the trunk too...poor poor planing on my part).

Oh yeah, I got distracted by one of my new favorite golf blogs Real Women Golf and The Golf Channel as well.  I am about to have a serious CTJ meeting with myself in order to quit dilly dallying along.  Perhaps I can tell myself that the more homework I get done, the closer I get to my next golf outing.....hmmmmmmm.  Inspiration indeed!

For now, I think I will take a lesson from King and just Git R Done...wait, that's Larry the Cable Guy. Oops! BUT he does host the seemingly-annual Git-R-Done Golf Classic.  Well I'll be darned!  Anyhow, back to King...he does write about the importance of...err...ummm...how can I relate this to golf...uhhhh...writing what you know.  Yeah.  So, I know that golf is a reward I'll work toward and that homework has to be done.  Yeah, that's it.

Okay, time to get back to work.  Until next time...

Adventures in Podcasting

Though this blog has barely gotten off the ground, I had a marvelous idea.  Why not create a regular podcast published through this blog and of course, have it focus on the same subject matter as well?  This will be my new purpose with this blog such that it can serve beginning golfers both in written and in audio format.

I recognize that this may merely become the location of my experiments, but who cares?  One has to start somewhere.  Besides, why not iron out all the kinks now when only I a read Moxiful Golf....for now ;-)

How I fell in love with my driver...

We've had a tumultuous relationship, my driver and I.  I was even beginning to believe that I hated it.  What I actually hated was my limited understanding of how to actually suck less drive properly.

Starting out with the world's best unintentional fade (that was really a slice), veering to the right a majestic 100+ yards, I knew I had the distance, but gee golly gosh darn, I could not figure out how to get the bleepin' ball to go straight.  Right in front of me.  I mean, it really shouldn't be so hard...in theory.  Insert my love of the driving range.  Free golf lessons by other more experienced golfers at every turn.

The first free instructor was an older gentleman who was out with his wife.  "Can I offer you one tip," he asked politely while cleaning his clubs.  "Oh certainly, please do," I replied.  I always appreciate free golf tips.  "Your swing is good, however bring your hip around with your arms as you follow through with your swing."  He took a moment to demonstrate in slow motion with his newly-cleaned iron.  I mimicked the motion. "Ahhhhh," I said aloud, indicating that the lightbulb had gone off.  I got it.  This is the "how"of getting "under the ball" as my instructor told me to do.

My second free instructor was an un-wedding-ringed tall gentleman who was probably within my parents' generation.  Towering over 6 feet tall, he politely mentioned that he admired the consistency of my slice.  "I could help you fix that," he said as he and his friend ventured toward their clubs.  After I had filled up on shade and sparkling water, I set out toward my clubs again.  His observation was that I kept shortening my finish.  This I knew, but for some reason kept doing anyway.  He also noted that my stance was a little too wide for my driver and that I should align my ball more with my front foot.  "This way," he said, "you're hitting the ball on the upswing."

The lightbulb clicked again.

I hit ball after ball after ball after ball and finally, the last shot I hit was the straightest and longest drive I have ever hit in my life.

Why golf, why me, why now?

It all started with a harmless trip to the driving range...and then another...and then my first round of 18 holes.

This Wednesday I received my first pair of golf shoes, purchased through the
PGA Tour Superstore (in the clearance section, of course).

I was hooked, for good.

In my new addiction, I've found myself trolling the internet for resources for female golfers...particularly sites focused toward ladies' golf apparel. You know what? Though the apparel is out there, it's not the easiest to find with a simple
Google Search (and NO, I will not try out Bing, so please do not suggest it). "Why not consolidate all of the links, resources, nifty items, etc. that I find related to being a beginning female golfer," I thought. Ta-da! Moxiful Golf was born.

As golf's fastest growing segment is of female players (and those of minority ethnicities as well), there is no better time than the present to put a good idea out there!

I hope you enjoy embarking on this wildly exciting journey alongside me as I trek into the wonderful world of golf.
